Dr. Jayn Rajandran grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She has lived, studied, and worked throughout the world (including Europe, Middle East, Asia, and North America), and she resides in the Bay Area. In addition to English, Dr. Jayn can communicate in 6 Asian languages, and she is currently learning Spanish due the increasing demands of the Spanish-speaking population.

Business background
Before Dr. Jayn became a therapist, she worked in the corporate world, for the world’s largest conglomerate (based in Germany). There she was involved in corporate mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring. This work enabled her to travel to many countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia, and the Middle East. Her extensive experience in corporate management, and her undergraduate degrees in accounting and economics, have been very useful in her therapy work, including her organizational development work and her work with top-level management EAP cases in Silicon Valley.

Graduate school
While working in the corporate world, Dr. Jayn was the recipient of the prestigious 2005 Frowein GmbH Award from Germany. This award provided an educational scholarship that enabled Dr. Jayn to complete 2 Masters degrees simultaneously—the first one in marriage and family therapy, and the second one in industrial and organizational psychology. Dr. Jayn graduated in the top 5% of her graduating class, which enabled her to receive 3 internship offers for her graduate and post-grad clinical training. Due to her ambitious nature and extremely strong work ethic, she decided to accept all 3 offers in order to get the best and most extensive clinical exposure, experience, and training.

Postgrad clinical training
After completing her 3 clinical internships, Dr. Jayn was hand-picked by the federal government to work on international drug trafficking and white-collar criminal justice cases. This experience compelled Dr. Jayn to start working with inmates of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Her important work with inmates included extensive trauma counseling for pregnant inmates who wanted to turn their lives around and become the best possible mothers to their children. This therapy work was very complex, as it entailed not only trauma counseling for the inmates to address separation/divorce and abuse, but also attachment therapy for the inmates’ children and family to strengthen the family unit. In conducting this work, Dr. Jayn collaborated with agencies such as Oakland Children’s Hospital and the Alameda Superior Court’s family and juvenile department.

Doctorate
Dr. Jayn then became a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) Marriage and Family Therapy. Her Doctoral dissertation was on Treating Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) with Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). Since many people seek EMDR psychotherapy for their childhood trauma, including CSA, Dr. Jayn’s dissertation examined what the research to date had revealed about gender differences in the dynamics of CSA, and the sequelae for male and female victims. Attention had to be given to family members being the perpetrators of CSA, in order to help educate the victims. These findings of her dissertation are essential in understanding how males and females experience, respond to, and recover from such abuse, and how to protect, prevent, and adequately support victims of CSA and their families. Her dissertation researched and examined the highlights of CSA trauma processing, by utilizing Parnell’s modified attachment-focused EMDR. Her research showed that not all CSA trauma leads to PTSD.

Innovative couples therapy

As an extremely experienced and seasoned therapist, Dr. Jayn enjoys and is committed to helping all age groups. Her work with adults includes her innovative approach to couples therapy. In her treatment of couples, Dr. Jayn provides not only joint therapy sessions in which both partners (and sometimes their family members) participate, but also individual sessions with each partner. This dual approach is more effective and also saves time, energy, and money by addressing and resolving the causes as well as the effects of the couple’s problems.

Children and teens
In addition to her work with adults, Dr. Jayn also enjoys and appreciates being able to help children and teens. Dr. Jayn has a unique way of relating to children and teens through a collaborative therapeutic relationship, and she often uses humor to facilitate understanding and change. As a strong believer in the benefits of starting self-growth at an early age, she feels that childhood is often the best time to receive therapy. She has also found that children are not as fragile or resistant to change as people might think, and that they’re actually often receptive to interventions and behavior modification treatments.

Dr. Jayn's perspective and style

Dr. Jayn’s great success with her clients is a result of not only her rigorous clinical training and diverse work experience as a psychotherapist, but also her empathetic and compassionate nature. She feels humbled and privileged to do her work, and honored to be invited into her clients’ inner worlds. She engages with each client with tremendous respect and acceptance, and she takes very seriously her duty to guide each client on his/her individual journey of healing and personal growth. Her style is based on a wholly supportive and collaborative approach to therapy, and a deep belief that every person possesses an amazing ability to solve their own problems and to heal themselves, especially with a little guidance. Dr. Jayn feels that each person deserves to live his/her life with minimal problems and maximal fulfillment—mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually—and Dr. Jayn’s core purpose in life is to help each client achieve this.
